NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Lumberjack baseball team took part in the Home Run Readers program throughout the month of November at the Charter Elementary School in Nacogdoches, encouraging and assisting fifth-grade students to read books.

The program was begun by Natalie Cardenas, the wife of SFA head coach Johnny Cardenas, who is a teacher at the school. Students were able to advance from first base to home plate one base at a time by completing four books from Nov. 1 to Dec. 1.

“I’m very proud of our guys for embracing this opportunity to reach out to some of the youth of the community in a positive way,” Johnny Cardenas said. “Reading is an important aspect of life, but with the internet taking up so much of everyone’s attention these days, it takes a lot of attention away from books. This was a chance for our young men to bring some attention back to that area.”

Lumberjack players showed up in the classroom each Friday throughout the month to encourage the students and read to them. At the end of the month, each of the students who completed a home run were given an SFA Baseball bracelet and a picture with the team.
