RiceBaseballHOUSTON – Current and former members of the Rice baseball program volunteered their time Saturday afternoon (Nov. 13) to help out at a kids’ baseball clinic for The Boys & Girls Club of Houston.

Current Rice players Abe Gonzales, Anthony Rendon and J.T. Chargois went through some of the game’s fundamentals with more than 50 young baseball fans at the Boys & Girls Club facility on the northwest side of town. The Owls had the opportunity to interact with the youths thanks to the dedicated community work of a couple of former Rice baseball lettermen.

For Owl Kenny Baldwin (1979), the current president of SpringSpirit Baseball – a Houston-based non-profit organization working to provide a pathway for developing the mind, body and spirit of Houston youths – is introducing baseball/softball as one option for kids to stay active and healthy. Baldwin and his Rice roommate, Allen Ramirez, (1979) who went on to play in the major leagues after an All-America career with the Owls, had key roles in organizing Saturday’s event. The children attending the clinic simply had a fantastic time.
