NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Lumberjack baseball team took time to step away from the diamond over the last weekend and helped out in conjunction with the United Way and the Nacogdoches Chamber of Commerce at the city’s annual Scare On The Square Event.
The Halloween festival featured a number of games and events on the city square in downtown Nacogdoches, and a group of nearly 40 players joined head coach Johnny Cardenas and the coaching staff in helping put the event on.
“This was just a great opportunity for our group to give back to the city of Nacogdoches and the community as a whole,” Cardenas said. “This town is very supportive of SFA, the athletics department and our team and it is important that we let the town know that we appreciate it.”
Players and coaches took part by helping run game booths, handing out candy or even directing traffic. They also helped clean up during and after the event, as well as filling in at various positions where they were needed.
The team partnered with the United Way months ago to help give back to the children of the community, but this was the biggest event for the partnership to date.
“We are very fortunate to be associated with a group such as the United Way,” Cardenas said. “What they do is extremely important in our community and we are excited we could be here to help in whatever way possible.”
