LAWRENCE, Kan. – Hoglund Ballpark, the home of the Kansas baseball team, received a $1.2 million facelift this summer as the Jayhawks installed AstroTurf USA’s Gameday 3D playing surface.
The entire field is covered in turf, with a different color and grade on the basepaths, at home plate and on the warning track. The pitcher’s mound is the only area with real dirt. The project was funded entirely through private donations to the baseball program, in an effort which began prior to the 2009 season.
“Our new 3D AstroTurf is the finest playing surface in the country!” Kansas Head Coach Ritch Price said.
“We have been wanting to make the change to turf for quite some time, because it will ensure that when the weather permits, we will be able to get out on the field. Our players and coaches have absolutely loved it so far.”
KU will become the fourth team in the Big 12 to play its home games on artificial turf, joining Texas, Texas Tech and Kansas State.
