LOS ANGELES – Three former USC baseball players have been named undergraduate assistant coach, interim head coach Frank Cruz announced today. Morgan Ensberg, Alberto Concepcion and Cyle Hankerd will be undergraduate coaches for the 2011 season.
Ensberg played eight seasons in the major leagues (2000-08) for Houston, San Diego and the New York Yankees (he played at the Triple-A level in 2001). The third baseman played in 731 games in the majors with a .263 career average, 110 home runs and 347 RBI. His best season came in 2005 when he played in the All-Star Game for Houston after batting .283 with 36 home runs and 101 RBI.
Last year, he served as color analyst for ESPN during the 2010 NCAA Tournament for the Fullerton Regional and the NCAA Super Regional in Tempe, Ariz.
He had a .331 career average at USC (1995-98) with 40 home runs and 149 RBI and was a member of two College World Series teams, including the 1998 national championship squad as an infielder. His 40 home runs rank him fifth on USC’s all-time list. His best season came in 1998 when he earned All-America third team honors with a .344 average, 21 home runs and 69 RBI.
Concepcion played at USC from 2000-02, earning All-America second team and All-Pac-10 honors in his 2002 junior season after batting .363 with 11 home runs and 48 RBI as a catcher. He was a member of the 2000 and 2001 College World Series squads and finished with a .334 career average with 26 home runs and 111 RBI.
Hankerd played at USC from 2004-06 and earned All-Pac-10 honors in his 2006 junior season after batting .383 with 10 home runs and 55 RBI as an outfielder. He finished his career with a .340 average with 12 home runs and 123 RBI.
USC opens the 2011 season with a tournament at Dedeaux Field, featuring Missouri, North Carolina and Cal Poly (Feb. 18-20).
