LighttheNight KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – For the fourth consecutive year, the University of Tennessee baseball team will help raise funds for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and participate in the Light the Night Walk on the UT campus at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 21. The Volunteers have exceeded their fundraising goals each of the past three years, raising almost $25,000 in the process.

“This is a cause that hits close to home with me, as well as with many of our players,” UT Head Coach Todd Raleigh said. “We are very honored to be able to play even a small role in helping to find more effective treatments, and hopefully a cure. The support from everyone on campus and throughout all of East Tennessee has been tremendous over the past three years, but there is still plenty more to be accomplished. I encourage everyone who can to help us raise money for this extremely worthy cause.”

As it has done in each of the last three years, the baseball team plans to expand its fundraising efforts outside of the Light the Night Walk by collecting donations at the Orange and White World Series games this fall. Fans can also contribute to the team’s fundraising goal by clicking here.

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) funds lifesaving research that has contributed to major advances in the treatment of blood cancers and treatments for other types of cancer, such as chemotherapy and stem cell transplants. These treatments have helped patients live better, longer lives. New targeted therapies that kill cancer cells without harming normal tissue are providing drugs and procedures that are improving quality of life.

In fact, in 2009 alone, LLS researchers conducted more than 90 clinical trials, a critical step in the development of new treatments and cures that will help patients live better, longer lives.

• A donation of $50 makes possible a Family Support group with a trained facilitator where comfort can be found and experiences can be shared among patients and family members.

• A donation of $100 helps supply laboratory researchers with supplies and materials critical to carrying out their search for cures.

• A donation of $1,000 makes possible one-on-one conversations with health care specialists who provide patients with information about their disease, treatment options, and helps prepare them with questions for their health care team.
