MitchCasterWichitaState WICHITA, Kan. – Wichita State baseball student-athlete Mitch Caster was killed in a car accident early Monday morning in Iowa.  He was driving home to Wichita from playing summer baseball in Rochester, Minn.

"We are all deeply saddened over the tragic loss of Mitch Caster," said head coach Gene Stephenson.  "Our entire team is devastated.  Mitch was a fine young man and great teammate.  The memories that every team member and coach has of him will always be cherished.  May God bless and keep him.  Our hearts go out to the entire Caster family in this time of grief."

Caster, a senior pitcher and outfielder, played in 74 games during his three-year career and also made 13 appearances on the mound.  This summer for Rochester, he pitched 28.1 innings with 31 strikeouts.

"We are never ready for situations like this," said Director of Athletics Eric Sexton.  "Mitch will be sorely missed and he was a great leader for our baseball team and entire student-athlete core.

"Wichita State Athletics sends its deepest condolences to the Caster family.  Our thoughts and prayers go out to them and all of Mitch’s friends and teammates at this difficult time."

At this time, arrangements are pending.
