Alabama backup catcher and former South Carolina quarterback Chris Smelley has left Alabama to pursue professional opportunities outside of baseball. He started his college career at South Carolina where he played three seasons under Steve Spurrier as a quarterback before deciding to transfer to Alabama. (FULL ARTICLE) He played in 21 games for the Gamecocks during his career. He was 5 and 4 as a starter in 2008 and 9 and 6 in 15 career starts. He completed 169 of 302 passes for 1,922 yards and 14 touchdowns and 15 interceptions during the 2008 campaign. This past season at Alabama on the diamond, he appeared in only 16 games (10 starts) hitting .152.
