CARY, N.C. — Kyle Winkler (Texas Christian), Madison Boer (Oregon) and Nick Ramirez (Cal State Fullerton) combined to throw a one-hitter as the Red team took Game 4 of the Collegiate National Team (CNT) Trials in easy fashion Friday night 7-1 at the National Training Complex (NTC).
With the win the Red team improves to 2-1-1, while the Blue team drops to 1-1-2.
The Red trio of hurlers fanned seven batters while walking just two during the 7 1/2 inning affair. Winkler picked up the win after tossing three perfect innings with three punch outs, while Boer fanned three over two innings of hitless work.
Ramirez, who was 1-for-4 from the plate with a run scored, allowed the only hit surrendering a leadoff triple to George Springer (Connecticut) in the seventh to straight-away center. Springer would score later on a sac fly off the bat of Nolan Fontana (Florida).
Red took an early 1-0 lead in the first when Drew Maggi (Arizona State) scored on a fielding error off the glove of Tyler Anderson (Oregon). Maggie doubled to start the frame then took third on Mikie Mahtook’s (LSU) ground out before crossing home during Jett Bandy’s (Arizona) at-bat.
Ryan Wright (Louisville) paced a two-run second for the Red pushing its lead three, 3-0, when he roped a triple off the wall in left center scoring Nick Martini (Kansas State) from first. Wright scored immediately after his plate appearance on Nick Ramirez’ grounder to short.
A pair of errors from the Blue squad and a two-out base hit to left field from Anthony Rendon (Rice) extended Red’s lead to 4-0. Wright reached on a fielding error then took third on a failed pickoff by Scott McGough (Oregon) before touching home on Rendon’s second hit of the evening.
The scoring continued in the fifth as the Red team scratched across two more runs making the score 7-0 when Mahtook touched home on another Blue error and Jett Bandy (Arizona) trotted home on a McGough balk.
Anderson suffered the loss allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits in three innings of work. McGough was touched for three unearned runs on two hits in three innings, while Lex Rutledge (Samford) gave up one run (unearned) on one hit in 2 1/3 innings. All three Blue pitchers recorded a pair of strikeouts on the night.
Both squads will be back on the diamond Saturday afternoon for Game 5 of the CNT Trials, which is slated for 2 p.m.
Notes: Saturday’s batting practice is scheduled for 12:05 p.m. and will last 45 minutes, which will be followed by infield/outfield at 12:55 p.m.
