The 5th FISU World University Baseball Championship will take place in Japan July 30-August 7, 2010. The competing teams are USA, Cuba, Canada, China, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Chinese Taipei, and Japan.

The Head Coach of the Canadian team is Todd Plaxton of Saskatoon, SK, who has coached Canada’s junior national team and the Saskatoon Yellow Jackets of the Western Major Baseball League in the past. The assistant coaches are Cavanaugh Whitely of British Columbia, Scott Ballantyne of Wilfred Laurier, and Brent Crowther.
The Canadian roster contains 12 players from Division I schools, and eight players from NAIA schools. The players with the best numbers are Greg Wallace of Evansville (.371, 9 home runs, 75 RBI), Ryan Fleming of Georgia State (.375, 13 home runs, 59 RBI), and Christian Kowalchuk of Arkansas (3-0, 2.11 ERA, 21 strikeouts in 13 appearances, 21 1/3 innings pitched). Aaron Johnson of Illinois was drafted by the Blue Jays in the 28th round of the 2010 MLB draft.

Breaking news: Cavanaugh Whitely is no longer an assistant coach at British Columbia. He is now the Head Coach at Douglas College, a Vancouver area JUCO that competes in the NWAACC.
