Tempe Regional Day 3 Recap

Arizona State 8 Hawaii 4

TEMPE, Ariz. – The No. 1 Arizona State University baseball team defeated Hawai’i 8-4 on Sunday to win the Tempe Regional and advance to the Super Regional round of the 2010 NCAA Tournament. A crowd of 3,123 at Winkles Field-Packard Stadium at Brock Ballpark saw the Sun Devils improve to 50-8 on the season with the win. It is the second straight and 18th overall 50-win season for ASU.

Kole Calhoun had two hits, including a solo home run, his 15th of the season and third in the three games of the Regional, and he earned Tempe Regional Most Outstanding Player. Drew Maggi added two hits, including the go-ahead two-run double in the fourth inning, Riccio Torrez and Andrew Aplin also had two hits each and Deven Marrero had a two-run home run.

Hawaii 12 San Diego 9

TEMPE, Ariz. – The University of Hawai‘i Rainbow baseball team (35-27) stayed alive, beating the No. 19 San Diego Toreros (37-22) 12-9 in the NCAA Tempe Regional elimination game at Packard Stadium on the campus of Arizona State Sunday. Blair Walters (2-1) got the win for UH while Matt Hauser (4-3) took the loss for USD.

David Freitas went 3-for-4 with four RBI, two runs, a home run and a double while Greg Garcia doubled twice, going 3-for-5 with four RBI. Kolten Wong was 3-for-6 with two runs while Piikea Kitamura going 2-for-3 with a double and three runs. Matt Roquemore also had a three-hit day with two runs while Chase Koissian went 2-for-5 with one RBI. Kevin Macdonald homered with Jeffrey Van Doornum scoring twice.
