2010 NCAA Regional Previews: Myrtle Beach

MyrtleBeachRegional The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers will be hosting an NCAA Regional this weekend at BB&T Coastal Field in Myrtle Beach SC. The other three teams in the regional are the number 2 seeded College of Charleston, number 3 seeded NC State, and Stony Brook rounds out the field as the fourth seed.

 

Coastal Carolina (51-7 overall, 25-0 Big South)

The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers enter the weekend with the most wins in the entire nation as they are 51-7 while being a perfect 25-0 in Big South play. They are led by redshirt sophomore Tommy LaStella as he is hitting .372 as he is tied for the team high with 14 homers and has driven in 58 runs. Jose Iglesias is tied with LaStella with 14 homers and drove in 71 runs. Rico Noel and Scott Woodward are absolute studs on the basepaths with Noel 51-64 and Woodward 48-54. The Coastal Carolina pitching staff is led by Anthony Meo who is 13-1 with a 1.80 ERA in 15 starts. Austin Fleet is 6-1 with a 1.83 ERA in 27 appearances.

College of Charleston (42-17 overall, 22-8 Southern Conference)

The College of Charleston Cougars enter the postseason with a 42-17 overall record while being 22-8 in Southern Conference play. They are coming off the Southern Conference tournament where they went 1-2 with a win over Appalachian State before losing back to back games to Western Carolina and Appalachian State. Cole Rakar leads the team with a .369 batting average while stealing 20 bases in 25 attempts. Jose Rodriguez is also solid as he has a .346 average while hitting 15 homers and driving in 64 runs. Matt Leeds is the best power hitter as he is hitting .325 with 20 homers and 81 RBI. Kevin Decker leads the pitching staff with a 7-0 record while having an ERA of 3.79.

NC State (38-22 overall, 15-15 ACC)

The NC State Wolfpack head into the Myrtle Beach Regional with a 38-22 overall record while being 15-15 in ACC play. They had an impressive run in the ACC tournament as they 2-2 with victories over Clemson and Virginia Tech while losing to Georgia Tech and then to Florida State in the championship game. Kyle Wilson leads the team with a .381 batting average while hitting seven homers and driving in 33 runs. Dallas Poulk is another hitter to watch as he is hitting .358 with 11 homers and 59 RBI. Jake Buchanan has been the ace all season as he is 8-5 with a 3.65 ERA in 17 games (16 starts). Grant Sasser has been the best bullpen guy as he has five saves in 25 appearances totaling 47 innings.

Stony Brook (29-25 overall, 15-9 America East)

Stony Brook enters the regional round with a 29-25 overall record while being 15-9 in America East. They went a perfect 3-0 with a victory over Maine and then defeated Albany twice. William Carmona leads the Seawolves attack with a .398 average with six homers and 47 RBI. Pat Cantwell is second on the squad with a .371 batting average with three homers and 36 RBI. Michael Stephen leads them with ten homers and is hitting .335 this season. Nick Tropeano is the top pitcher for Stony Brook as he is 8-3 with a 2.36 ERA in 13 starts including six complete games. (Most of them were 7 inning games). William Carmona also doubles on the mound as he leads the team with four saves with a 2-2 record and an ERA of 5.33.
