Houston-Victoria, with an ISR ranking of #35, pulled off a major upset on the first day of of the NAIA Opening Round. They defeated #7-ranked British Columbia 5-0 at Fresno, CA.
LHP Broc Haymon, who has the lowest ERA in the NAIA (1.32), pitched a complete-game shutout for the Jaguars, held the Thunderbirds to five hits, struck out 12. 2B Anthony Phillips scored the winning run on a fielder’s choice in the second inning.
The Jaguars will face another upset winner, last year’s runner-up Point Loma Nazarene, at 3:00 PM PDT on Wednesday. The Sea Lions defeated Fresno Pacific 14-12.
All the other top seeds won. Defending champion Lubbock Christian defeated Mount Marty 7-2 in Lubbock, TX.
