FRISCO, Texas – UTSA second baseman Ryan Hutson has been named the Southland Conference Hitter of the Week while Nicholls right-handed pitcher Tyler Minto has been named the Southland Pitcher of the Week, the league office announced Monday.
Hutson helped lead the Roadrunners to their second consecutive conference sweep last weekend against McNeese State. The junior from Round Rock, Texas (Round Rock), was 9-of-12 in the series with three home runs, seven RBI and seven runs scored. Hutson reached base in 12 of his 15 plate appearances, recorded a trifecta of three-hit games and had a home run in all three contests. He now has 38 career home runs, which moved him into a third-place tie with Michael Rockett (2006-09) on the program’s all-time list. Hutson enters the final week of the regular season riding an eight-game hit streak, during which he is batting 20-for-32 (.625) with four home runs and nine RBI. He leads the team with a .360 batting average, 14 home runs and 42 RBI.
Minto recorded the fourth complete game of his career and his second of the season in leading the Colonels to a 6-2 victory over the Bobcats to clinch the first series victory over Texas State since 2002. The senior from Mobile, Ala. (Baker), allowed nine hits, struck out five and walked just one while limiting the Bobcats to just two runs. Minto retired 15 of the first 18 batters he faced and retired eight consecutive from the third through the fifth innings. He leads Nicholls with a .348 ERA to go with a 5-3 record.
Honorable mention for hitter of the week goes to Lamar designated hitter Ryan Meade, Southeastern Louisiana catcher Josh Cryer, Nicholls outfielder Bear Comer, UT Arlington outfielder Preston Beck and Central Arkansas designated hitter Clay Washington. Honorable mention for pitcher of the week goes to UTSA right hander Kevin Clarke, Southeastern Louisiana right hander Tyler Watkins, Texas State right hander Carson Smith, Central Arkansas right hander Michael Wild and Northwestern State right hander Ryan Zimmerman.
