GREENSBORO, N.C. – Virginia Tech catcher Steve Domecus and NC State’s Drew Poulk has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Baseball Co-Players of the Week, while Virginia’s Robert Morey received Pitcher of the Week honors.
Domecus had at least three hits and one double in each of Virginia Tech’s three games this past weekend, helping the Hokies to a series win over Duke. On May 15 – the day the 16th-ranked Hokies clinched a spot in the ACC Championship field – Domecus went 4-for-6 with three runs scored, three RBIs, two doubles and a stolen base.
Overall, the Novato, Calif., senior went 10-for-16 (.625) with five doubles, six runs scored and seven RBIs. He registered a slugging percentage of .938 and an on-base percentage of .625.
NC State’s Poulk had multiple-hit games in each of the Wolfpack’s three contests at Florida State, including a pair of hit and two runs scored in a 5-2 win over the fifth-ranked Seminoles in Friday night’s series opener. He finished with eight hits in 10 at-bats (.800) and drew two more walks for an on-base percentage of .846.
Poulk, a senior from Morehead City, N.C., homered twice in the FSU series and had three doubles for a 1.700 slugging percentage.
Morey pitched his second-consecutive complete game, a first at UVa since Andrew Dobies fired back-to-back complete games in 2004. The Virginia Beach, Va., junior was the first opposing pitcher to go the distance vs. North Carolina this season in Saturday’s 5-1 win.
Morey held UNC to a season-low three hits. He did not allow a hit until the sixth inning and retired 15 straight batters at one point. He also tied his season high with eight strikeouts as the top-ranked Cavaliers posted their 13th straight victory in their current 14-game winning streak.
