CHARLOTTE, N.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com) – Coastal Carolina sophomore shortstop Taylor Motter (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.) has been named the Big South Conference’s Choice Hotels Player of the Week, and Winthrop’s Matteo D’Angelo (Bologna, Italy) has been named The Crons Brand Pitcher of the Week for games played April 26-May 2, it was announced today by the League office.
Motter batted .462 (6-13) with eight RBI in four games last week for the Chanticleers. He had a hit in each game, starting with two hits in the 6-3 loss at No. 1 Virginia last Tuesday. He had a run-scoring triple in the game, and followed with three RBI, a double, walk and run scored in the Big South series opener against UNC Asheville. Motter went 2-4 with an RBI in Saturday’s win over the Bulldogs and ended the week going 1-3 with a double and three runs batted in on Sunday. He also played error-free defense at his shortstop position, handling 16 chances cleanly. For the week, Motter slugged .769 and posted a .467 on-base percentage.
D’Angelo picked up his first career complete game shutout in the nightcap of Saturday’s doubleheader against Presbyterian College. He gave up just three hits in the contest with only one walk and six strikeouts. D’Angelo did not allow a base runner past second base until the top of the ninth inning with two outs. He gave up his first hit in the second frame and did not allow another hit until the ninth, when PC picked up its other two hits on the evening. D’Angelo retired 20 consecutive batters during the stretch and had six-straight 1-2-3 innings.
