ILLINOIS def. MICHIGAN STATE, 4-3 (10)

Illinois took Game 1 of its doubleheader with Michigan State on Friday, edging the Spartans, 4-3, in 10 innings. Casey McMurray led Illinois with two hits and three RBI, including a home run, also driving in what proved to be the game-winner in the top of the 10th. Wes Braun picked up the win in relief, throwing three scoreless innings. Bryan Roberts earned his sixth save with a clean 10th frame. Illinois starter Lee Zerrusen allowed three runs on seven hits and two walks in six innings. Torsten Boss, Chris Roberts and Andy Johnson had two hits each to lead the Spartans. Tim Simpson took the loss in relief, while starter A.J. Achter threw nine innings, allowing three runs on five hits and four walks with seven strikeouts.

MICHIGAN STATE def. ILLINOIS, 10-2

Michigan State rebounded from a narrow loss in Game 1 of its doubleheader, downing Illinois, 10-2, in the nightcap. The Spartans combined for six extra-base hits in the game, while Ryan Jones and Jeff Holm had three hits each. Bo Felt had three RBI on two hits, including his second homer of the season. Kurt Wunderlich picked up the win, allowing just one run on nine hits with two strikeouts in eight innings. Kevin Johnson suffered the loss for Illinois. Catcher Aaron Johnson led the Illini at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a double.

MINNESOTA def. INDIANA, 14-0

Minnesota collected 24 hits en route to its third shutout of the season, a 14-0 triumph over Indiana on Friday. Seven Gophers had multiple hits, including Nick O’Shea, who went 4-for-5 with two runs and two RBI. Five Minnesota players had multiple RBI, led by Andy Henkemeyer’s three. Seth Rosin picked up his fourth win of the season, allowing just three hits while striking out seven in 7.2 innings. Drew Leininger took the loss for Indiana, just his second of the year. Center fielder Mack Sterling had two of Indiana’s three hits, going 2-for-4.

IOWA def. MICHIGAN, 5-2

Iowa knocked off Michigan, who entered the game tied for first in the Big Ten, in Game 1 of Friday’s doubleheader. Zach McCool led the Hawkeyes with three hits, while Kurtis Muller had two and each had a double. Jarred Hippen tossed a complete game, giving up one earned run on six hits and a walk with five strikeouts. Alan Oaks was tagged with the loss. Anthony Toth and Mike Kittle each had two hits for the Wolverines, while Kittle also scored a run.

IOWA def. MICHIGAN, 5-3

Iowa completed its doubleheader sweep of Michigan with a 5-3 win on Friday evening. Three Hawkeyes had multiple hits in the game, including Ryan Durant who went 2-for-5 with four RBI and a pair of doubles. Nick Brown earned the win, allowing two runs on five hits and two walks with five strikeouts in 6.2 innings. Kevin Lee picked up his seventh save with a scoreless, hitless ninth. Bobby Brosnahan took the loss for Michigan. The Wolverines were led at the plate by Ryan LaMarre and Coley Crank who had two hits each.

OHIO STATE def. PENN STATE, 3-1

Ohio State claimed sole possession of first place in the Big Ten with a 3-1 win over Penn State on Friday. Buckeye ace Alex Wimmers threw a complete game, allowing just one run on four hits and five walks with 11 strikeouts. Matt Streng led the Buckeyes, going 2-for-3 with a run and two RBI on a double and his first home run of the season. Steve Snyder led the Penn State offense with one hit and an RBI. Steven Hill took the loss despite allowing just three runs on eight hits and three walks with five strikeouts in seven innings of work.
