This is your Big 12 Recap for April 23.
#2 Texas 14 Oklahoma State 1
The No. 3 Texas Longhorns keep their winning streak alive after a 14 -1 victory over the Oklahoma State Cowboys. Texas continued their strong offensive production and got a complete game out of Taylor Jungmann to extend the win streak to 14 games and the Big 12 win streak to 12 games.
Texas (32-7, 14-2 Big 12) got the scoring going early. After back-to-back walks to Brandon Loy and Tant Shepherd, Cameron Rupp sent a three-run shot off the top of the scoreboard to put the Longhorns up 3-0 after the first inning.
The Longhorns added a run in the bottom of the second with Kevin Lusson leading off with a double down the leftfield line. Lusson then swiped third before coming around to score on a Cohl Walla RBI single.
Oklahoma State (23-14, 5-8 Big 12) got on the board in the top of the fourth inning. Tom Belza led off the inning with a single, and Kevin David doubled down the left field line putting runners on second and third. Mark Ginther then hit a sacrifice fly to deep right to plate Belza and cut the Longhorn lead to 4-1.
Texas answered with a run of its own in the bottom of the inning. Lusson hit a two-out double, and Connor Rowe brought him home with a triple to left-center.
The Longhorns continued their scoring production with a four-run fifth. Loy led off the inning with a single. Shepherd followed with a bloop bunt single and Rupp was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Kevin Keyes then hit a double past a diving center fielder to bring in Loy and Shepherd. Russell Moldenhauer’s single then plated Rupp and Keyes, extending the Longhorn lead to 9-1. FULL STORY
Texas A&M 6 #17 Oklahoma 2
Barret Loux fanned 10 over seven strong innings and Caleb Shofner hit a key three-run home run late to lift Texas A&M to a 6-2 win over 17th-ranked Oklahoma Friday night in a Big 12 series opener before 3,692 fans at Olsen Field.
Loux combined with Michael Wacha to punch out 15 Sooner hitters and allow just four hits on the night en route to the second straight win for the Aggies (22-14-1, 7-8-1 Big 12). OU fell to 27-11 and 6-8 with the loss.
Shofner delivered the game’s decisive blow in the seventh. With A&M holding a 3-2 lead, and two on and two out in the frame, OU went to reliever Jeremy Erben. Shofner turned on Erben’s only pitch of the game and launched his sixth home run of the season over the fence in left to give the Aggies a four-run cushion.
Wacha then entered and tossed two nearly perfect innings–allowing only a hit batter and notching five of his six outs via the strikeout.
Texas A&M built a three-run lead by pecking away at Sooner starter J.R. Robinson. Brodie Greene’s 200th career hit, a double to right center in the first, scored leadoff man Tyler Naquin to stake the Aggies to an early 1-0 edge.
Andrew Collazo would make it 2-0 in the second with a one-out RBI double just inside the bag at third and, in the fourth, Naquin laced a two-out single up the middle to plate Kenny Jackson with A&M’s third run. FULL STORY
Baylor 7 Nebraska 6
Joey Hainsfurther’s eighth-inning sacrifice fly plated Landis Ware with the game-winning run, as Baylor overcame a 6-5 eighth-inning deficit to knock off Nebraska, 7-6, in the series opener on Friday night at Baylor Ballpark.
Baylor (23-15, 6-8 Big 12) won for the 16th time in its last 18 home games, but the Bears needed a pair of late rallies to earn the victory.
Nebraska (18-20, 5-11 Big 12) jumped out to a 3-0 lead on a three-run homer from Adam Bailey in the third inning. BU starting pitcher Logan Verrett struck out the first two batters of the inning, but he gave up a double to DJ Belfonte and then hit Kale Kiser with a pitch to put two runners on for Bailey, who extended his Big 12 lead with his 15th home run on a 1-1 pitch from Verrett.
Verrett bounced back and struck out four while facing the minimum over the next four frames to keep the Bears within striking distance until the offense got hot.
Nebraska starter Michael Mariot allowed just a pair of singles through the first three innings, but the Bears finally broke through in the fourth. Tyler Collins hit a two-out single, and Gregg Glime knocked a RBI double down the right-field line to cut the deficit to 3-1.
Raynor Campbell followed with a single, but Glime was thrown out attempting to score from second base, and Nebraska carried its 3-1 lead to the sixth.
Muncy led off with a single and Collins followed with a double to put the tying run in scoring position with no outs in the bottom half of the sixth. Glime followed with his second double of the night, tying the score at 3-3. Campbell delivered the Bears’ fourth straight hit to put runners on the corners with no outs, but Mariot struck out the next three to keep the score tied. FULL STORY
Kansas 10 Texas Tech 2
Junior right fielder Casey Lytle went 3-for-5 with three runs scored, including one of six Kansas runs in the first inning as the Jayhawks rolled to a 10-2 Friday night victory over Texas Tech at Hoglund Ballpark in the opening game of a three-game Big 12 series.
Kansas wins its fifth straight game to improve to 25-14-1 overall and 6-6-1 in the Big 12, while the Red Raiders snapped a four-game winning streak to fall to 22-20 and 8-8 in conference play.
The Jayhawks sent 10 men to the plate in the bottom of the first inning, scoring six runs on six hits and cruised from there. Junior Tony Thompson collected a two-run single to start things off and then scored on a two-run single by designated hitter Chris Manship. Jimmy Waters also collected an RBI single in the inning.
The six-run cushion was enough support for junior right-handed pitcher T.J. Walz, who improved to 6-3 on the season. The 6-foot junior went 7 1/3 innings allowing one earned run on six hits with one walk and seven strikeouts. Walz improved to 3-0 in home starts this season. FULL STORY
