Junior right-hander Brandon Workman pitched a four-hit shutout and the No. 4 Texas Longhorns hit three home runs in an 8-0 win over the Texas A&M Aggies at Olsen Field on Sunday afternoon. The triumph gave the Horns a three-game sweep of the State Farm Lone Star Showdown.
The win was Texas’ 12th in a row overall. It also marked the 11th consecutive Big 12 Conference win. The Longhorns improved to 30-7 overall and 13-2 in Big 12 win. With the win, Texas remained 2.5 games ahead of Kansas State (9-3) atop the conference standings
Workman (7-1) scattered four hits and one walk while striking out eight over 9.0 to record his first shutout of the season and the second of his career. Two of the four hits Workman allowed were of the infield variety.
After three innings in which the two offenses combined for just one hit, the Longhorns took control of the game with three runs in the top of the fourth. With two outs, Cameron Rupp dropped a single into rightfield and Russell Moldenhauer singled up the middle to put two Horns on the pond. Kevin Keyes put a charge in a 1-1 pitch, launching it over the centerfield fence as Texas staked claim to a 3-0 lead.
With one out in the top of the fifth, Jordan Etier deposited a 1-0 offering into Aggie Alley over the leftfield wall to inflate the cushion to 4-0.
Etier manufactured a run in the seventh to give Texas a five-run lead. With one out in the frame, the sophomore drilled a double off the right centerfield wall, stole third and came around to score when the catchers throw trickled down the leftfield line.
Texas kept the cavalcade of runs going with two runs in the eighth. Rupp hit a leadoff single and scored when Moldenhauer shot a 2-2 pitch over the fence in right centerfield to inflate the cushion to 7-0.
The Longhorns tacked on a final run in the ninth when Tant Shepherd tripled and scored on a wild pitch to give Texas an 8-0 advantage.
After winning a 4-3 decision in 11 innings in the series opener, Texas outscored the Aggies 22-0 in the final two games and out-hit A&M 28-5 on Saturday and Sunday. FULL STORY
Texas Tech 8 #15 Oklahoma 3
Texas Tech secured its third consecutive Big 12 series win for the first time since 2004 this afternoon as the Red Raiders dealt No. 11 Oklahoma an 8-3 loss in the rubber match of this three game series in front of 3,100 fans at Dan Law Field.
The win moves Tech over the .500 mark for the first time since March 12 as the Red Raiders are 20-19 on the year and 8-7 in Big 12 Conference play. Tech’s win over the Sooners (26-10; 6-7 Big 12) gives the Red Raiders sole possession of third place heading into next weekend’s series at fifth place Kansas at Hoglund Balllpark in Lawrence.
Just as they did in the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader, the Red Raiders struck in the first inning but this time they grabbed more than a one-run lead. Jamodrick McGruder, who led off game-two of yesterday’s doubleheader with a solo home run, was hit by a pitch to start the first today and that jumpstarted a five-run outburst by the Red Raiders. Freshman Scott LeJeune plated the first run of the day when he grounded into a fielder’s choice that allowed Joey Kenworthy to score from third. After Barrett Barnes gave Tech a 2-0 lead by scoring on a fielding error by OU second baseman Cale Ellis, sophomore designated hitter Kevin Whitehead delivered the big blow. With two outs and runners at first and third, Whitehead belted a three-run home run into the Oklahoma bullpen that gave the Red Raiders an early 5-0 lead. FULL STORY
#24 Kansas State 3 Baylor 2
Sophomore Justin Lindsey shut down Baylor for the first six innings before the K-State bullpen held off a late comeback as the 20th-ranked Wildcats completed a sweep over the Bears with a 3-2 victory Sunday afternoon at Tointon Family Stadium.
With the win, Kansas State moved to 26-8, improving its best start in school history. The Wildcats also earned their ninth conference win in 12 tries, tying it with the 1990 squad for the best conference mark through 12 league games.
Baylor, which had won eight of 10 games coming into the series, fell to 21-14 overall and 5-8 in Big 12 action.
The sweep was the first over the Bears since 2006 and the second conference sweep for the Wildcats this season, just the second time in Big 12 history K-State has swept two conference series in a year.
The Wildcat pitching staff kept Baylor in check all weekend as the Bears managed only six runs in the series, the lowest allowed by Kansas State in a three-game conference series since BU scored five times in 2006. Baylor scored its six runs on just 13 hits, the lowest allowed in a conference series in head coach Brad Hill’s seven-year tenure.
Lindsey had the best outing of his career as the right-hander didn’t allow an earned run in 6.1 innings. The Chandler, Ariz., product retired the side in order twice in his six complete frames and only three runners reached base in those innings on two walks and a fourth-inning single.
“We had some pretty good pitching performances this weekend,” Hill said. “I thought Justin was outstanding. He did a great job of keeping Baylor off-balance. He had the fastball and changeup going. He did a great job of confusing them. We saw a lot of swings that were off-time. His big thing is that he threw more strikes today, so they had to respect the strike zone. When Justin makes the hitters respect the strike zone because he is all around it, then he is going to be successful.” FULL STORY
Kansas 6 Nebraska 1
Kansas left fielder Jimmy Waters hit two home runs Sunday and drove in four runs, while freshman Tanner Poppe earned his first Big 12 victory as the Jayhawks downed Nebraska, 6-1 to earn the series victory at Hawks Field at Haymarket Park.
The Jayhawks win a series in Lincoln, Neb., for the first time since 1996, and improve to 22-14-1 overall and 5-6-1 in the Big 12. The Huskers fall to 18-18 and 5-10 in conference play.
Waters two home runs, coming in the third and the eighth, proved to be the difference offensively for the Jayhawks. The junior collected four hits in the weekend series against Nebraska – all of them left the yard.
The junior came up with two men on and one out in the third and blasted a 1-1 fastball into the right field seats staking Kansas to a 4-0 lead. Waters’ second homer – a solo shot to left center – gave him a team-high eight round-trippers on the season.
That was all the run support starting pitcher Tanner Poppe would need. The right-handed freshman went six innings allowing one run on four hits with two walks and no strikeouts. Poppe retired eight men via fly outs, and induced three inning-ending double plays. FULL STORY
Oklahoma State 4 Missouri 3
Dean Green’s solo home run in the top of the ninth inning propelled Oklahoma State to a series-clinching 4-3 win over Missouri Sunday at Taylor Stadium.
The win gave OSU its second Big 12 Conference series win of the season as the Cowboys improved to 5-7 in league play and 21-13 overall.
Green’s home run, which led off the ninth inning and came against MU reliever Phil McCormick, was his fourth long ball of the season and highlighted a 3-for-4 day for the junior first baseman.
Kevin Chambers also had a big day for the Cowboys. The freshman started the day in right field and was 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs and then worked the final 1.2 innings on the mound to earn the win. Chambers did not allow a run and gave up just one hit in improving to 4-2 on the season.
After three scoreless innings to open the game, OSU struck first with a run in the top of the fourth. Kevin David got things started with a leadoff single and after stealing second, he scored the game’s first run on an RBI single by Chambers. FULL STORY
