FRISCO, Texas – Texas State outfielder Laurn Randell has been named the Southland Conference Hitter of the Week while Lamar left-handed pitcher Jonathan Dziedzic and Sam Houston State right-handed pitcher Dallas Gallant have been named the Southland Co-Pitchers of the Week, the league office announced Monday.
Randell led Texas State’s offensive attack this weekend, batting .733 in four games and helping Texas State to a 3-1 week. The senior from Austin, Texas (McCallum), went 1-for-4 at Baylor, but shined in the Bobcats’ three-game sweep of Central Arkansas. He went 5-for-5 with three RBI and two runs in the opening game of the series and fell a double shy of the cycle because he stretched out his second triple on the day. Randell also notched his first home run of the season in the 14-2 run-rule win to be named Hitter of the Day in Baseball America’s Around the Nation Blog. Randell remained perfect at the plate reaching base each time, going 2-for-2 with a pair of walks and a hit by pitch. He closed out the series with a 3-for-4 effort, including his third homer of the series. Against the Bears, Randell batted .909 with a 2.091 slugging percentage and a .938 on-base percentage, while adding one outfield assist and a pair of stolen bases.
Dziedzic struck out a career-high 13 batters in a 9-2 victory at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Sunday. The previous high for the freshman from Humble, Texas (Atascocita), was 10 against North Dakota State on Feb. 27. Before turning the reins over the Cardinal bullpen for the final inning, he struck out the side in the eighth inning. He allowed six hits and only one of the two runs he allowed was earned. Dziedzic is now 2-2 with a 4.15 ERA this season. He improved his season strikeout total to 59, third best in the Southland.
Gallant threw a complete-game two-hitter on Saturday to lead Sam Houston to a 7-1 victory over McNeese State less than 24 hours after the Cowboys had run-ruled the Bearkats, 14-1, in the series opener. The junior from Trinity, Texas (Trinity), struck out six against two walks. The victory turned the series around for Sam Houston, which also won 6-3 Sunday for the series win. He gave up only one unearned run in two appearances last week. The win was his first of the season.
Honorable mention for hitter of the week goes to Stephen F. Austin catcher/designated hitter Jarid Scarafiotti, Southeastern Louisiana second baseman Brock Hebert, Lamar shortstop Aaron Buchanan and Northwestern State leftfielder Eric DeBlanc. Honorable mention for pitcher of the week goes to McNeese State right hander Dustin Lloyd, Northwestern State right hander Ryan Zimmerman and right hander Carson Smith. To receive honorable mention, a player must receive votes from 25 percent of the Southland baseball sports information contacts.
Each school’s SID nominates and votes for the players of the week, though is not permitted to vote for his or her own player.
