FRISCO, Texas – Sam Houston State outfielder Mark Hudson has been named the Southland Conference Hitter of the Week and UT Arlington right-handed pitcher Jason Mitchell has been named the Southland Pitcher of the Week, the league office announced Monday.
Hudson led the Bearkats to five victories last week, including a three-game conference sweep at UTSA and non-conference games against Houston Baptist and Prairie View. Last week, the junior from Victoria, Texas (Memorial) was 10-for-23 (.435) with four home runs, nine RBI and seven runs scored. In the second game of the UTSA series, Hudson belted two home runs in a 4-for-5 effort that produced four RBI. The Bearkats had not won a regular-season game against the Roadrunners since 2005. Sam Houston State, which has won six of its last eight games, is 11-3 overall and 6-3 in conference play.
Mitchell threw his second consecutive complete game in a 3-1 victory over Northwestern State in the series opener last Friday. The senior from Phoenix, Ariz. (Mountain Pointe), allowed only one run on five hits with six strikeouts in winning for the third time this season. Mitchell also made a midweek appearance, striking out the side in a one-inning outing against Louisiana-Monroe last Tuesday. Mitchell leads the Southland Conference and currently ranks seventh in the nation with 52 strikeouts. He also ranks fourth in the nation with 46.0 innings pitched. This is the second time this season Mitchell has been named the league’s pitcher of the week, having previously been selected March 2.
Honorable mention for hitter of the week goes to UT Arlington center fielder Michael Choice, Texas State infielder Kyle Kubitza and McNeese State second baseman Jace Peterson. Honorable mention for pitcher of the week goes to Sam Houston State right hander Brandon Kimbrel, Northwestern State right hander Ryan Zimmerman, Southeastern Louisiana right hander Chris Franklin and Stephen F. Austin left hander Tyler Herriage. To receive honorable mention, a player must receive votes from 25 percent of the Southland baseball sports information contacts.
Each school’s SID nominates and votes for the players of the week, though is not permitted to vote for his or her own player.
