GREENSBORO, N.C. – Georgia Tech’s Derek Dietrich and Florida State’s Tyler Holt have been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Baseball Players of the Week, while Virginia Tech’s Justin Wright has received the Pitcher of the Week honor.
Dietrich and Holt led their teams to three-game sweeps in conference play, while Wright pitched a complete-game shutout in his weekend start.
Holt led Florida State to a perfect week, including a weekend series sweep at home against Maryland as the Seminoles climbed within one game of the ACC Atlantic Division lead.
Holt hit .429 in the four games last week, reaching base in every game while scoring at least one run. The junior centerfielder applied the finishing touches by hitting for the cycle in the series finale against Maryland on Sunday. Holt achieved the cycle in his first four at-bats collecting a single down the right field foul line in the first, a double down the left field foul line in the second, a triple to the gap in left-center in the third and a home run to left in the fifth.
The Gainesville, Fla., native finished Sunday afternoon 4-for-5, a season-high for hits, with three runs and two RBI. Holt becomes the first Seminole to hit for the cycle since Stephen Drew performed the feat against Wake Forest on May 20, 2004. Holt registered home runs in back-to-back games against the Terps and was a perfect 8-for-8 in fielding opportunities over the weekend.
Georgia Tech’s Dietrich batted .520 (13-for-25) with two doubles, two triples, two home runs and nine RBI to lead Georgia Tech to a 5-0 record.
The Parma, Ohio, native held a 1.000 slugging percentage, a .538 on-base percentage, amassed 25 total bases and was a perfect 2-for-2 in stolen bases. Dietrich twice set a career-high for hits, grabbing four against Mercer last Tuesday, before eclipsing that mark with five against No. 17 North Carolina on Sunday.
Dietrich was 5-for-7 on Sunday vs. UNC. His two-run homer with two outs in the ninth inning capped a five-run rally by the Jackets, tying the game at 8-8, and sending it into extra innings, where Georgia Tech eventually won 11-8 in the 10th. The junior shortstop has hit a home run in five of his last six ACC games, and currently has six round-trippers on the year.
Virginia Tech’s Wright continued his mastery over Wake Forest with a complete-game shutout last Friday, the third complete game of his career.
Wright allowed just four hits on the way to earning his third career win against the Demon Deacons and leveled his season record at 3-3. The junior left-hander retired 14 of the last 15 batters he faced, giving up just one single during his last five innings of work.
Wright, a native of Montclair, Va., struck out six men and did not walk a batter. Wright also threw a complete game against Wake Forest last season. In three career appearances against Wake Forest, Wright has allowed just two runs on 14 hits and one walk over 22.1 innings, while striking out 16 batters.
