TeddyKaufmannUSF PROVIDENCE, R.I. – With one of the most impressive pitching performances of the season, USF senior lefthander Teddy Kaufman earns the Bulls’ first BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week honor of the season. Villanova sophomore outfielder Matt Szczur earned his first BIG EAST Player of the Week award following a successful week at the plate.

Kaufman pitched nine innings in a 4-0 win over Central Florida on March 16. The senior struck out a BIG EAST-high 14 batters while allowing zero runs and four hits. He is one of only four BIG EAST pitchers to pitch nine innings in a game this season and the first to record a shutout victory in that appearance.

Szczur batted .652 (15-23) with a .704 on-base percentage and an .826 slugging percentage. The sophomore had at least two hits in all five games the team played, including three three-hit games and one four-hit contest. He drove in the game-winning run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth in a 2-1 win over Niagara on March 19. Szcur hit his first home run of the season and second of his career against Youngstown State on March 21. The home run was also the 100th career hit for Szczur in only 255 career at-bats (.392 career batting average). He drew four walks during the week and did not strike out in 27 plate appearances.
