EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State junior pitcher A.J. Achter was named Big Ten Pitcher of the Week on Monday by the conference office. Achter garnered the honor after throwing his first-career complete game shutout in a 13-0 win over Notre Dame in game one of a doubleheader on Saturday. The righty struck out a career-high nine batters while scattering seven hits and allowing just three walks in the win. Achter is now 2-0 and ranks second in the Big Ten with a 1.83 ERA.

The weekly honor is the first of Achter’s career and the second for a Spartan pitcher this season as Kurt Wunderlich earned the award on March 1.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Zach Hurley, Ohio State

Hurley takes home his second Player of the Week honor this season after leading the Buckeyes to a 3-0 start on their spring break trip with wins against Eastern Illinois, Bucknell and Army over the weekend. Hurley hit .643 with a 1.286 slugging percentage, combining for an OPS of 1.953. Over three games, the outfielder totaled nine runs and four RBI, registering multiple hits in every contest. The senior recorded three doubles and two home runs over the weekend, also going 3-for-3 on the base paths. Hurley ranks among the Big Ten’s top 10 in average (.414), slugging (.743) and on-base percentage (.481). The weekly accolade marks the third for an Ohio State hitter this season.

PITCHER OF THE WEEK

Achter tossed his first career complete-game shutout on Saturday as Michigan State downed Notre Dame, 13-0, in Game 1 of a three-game sweep over the Fighting Irish. The junior struck out nine batters while scattering seven hits and allowing just three walks. Achter faced the minimum in five of his nine innings, improving his season record to 2-0. The right-hander owns a season ERA of 1.83 and is allowing opposing batters to hit at just a .222 clip. The weekly honor is the first of Achter’s career and the second for a Spartan pitcher this season.
