TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Behind six shutout innings from Danny Hultzen (So., Bethesda, Md.) and a four-hit, two-home run performance from Dan Grovatt (Jr., Tabernacle, N.J.), the Virginia baseball team rolled to a 5-0 victory over Florida State on Friday evening at Dick Howser Stadium in Tallahassee, Fla. With the three-hit shutout, the Cavaliers earned their first win in Tallahassee since 2005 and snapped the Seminoles’ 12-game win streak to start the season.
Both teams are ranked nationally among the top five. Virginia is ranked as high as No. 1 in the Baseball America and Rivals.com polls, while Florida State stands as high as No. 2 nationally in the Collegiate Baseball, NCBWA and USA Today/ESPN Coaches polls.
#5 Georgia Tech 9 Wake Forest 1
ATLANTA – After nearly a four-hour delay, Deck McGuire pitched his first career complete game, holding Wake Forest to just three hits in No. 4 Georgia Tech’s (11-1, 1-0 ACC) 9-1 win over Wake Forest (6-9, 0-1 ACC) to open Atlantic Coast Conference play Friday night at Russ Chandler Stadium.
On a night marred by cold weather and wet conditions, McGuire (3-0) put on a show, and reminded those in attendance why he was named the 2009 ACC Pitcher of the Year. The Richmond, Va. native struck out eight batters and allowed just one run on three Demon Deacon hits. The Richmond, Va. native retired 17 straight batters at one point, a stretch that lasted from the second to the eighth inning.
#11 North Carolina 21 Duke 9
DURHAM, N.C. – Freshman Brian Goodwin registered a season-high four hits and five RBI to lead No. 11 North Carolina over Duke 21-9 on a rainy Friday night at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park. The Tar Heels 21 runs scored and 21 hits are both season highs. Junior Matt Harvey (3-0) earned the win as Carolina improves to 12-2 overall and 1-0 in ACC play. The loss snaps Duke’s eight-game win streak as the Blue Devils fall to 9-4 overall and 0-1 in league play.
Eleven different Tar Heels posted at least one hit and eight different players recorded at least one RBI. The 21 runs on 21 hits are the most since an April 15, 2009 Carolina win over Wofford 20-4. Goodwin paced the Heels going 4-for-4 with five RBI and four runs scored. The freshman was a triple shy of hitting for the cycle en route to mashing his team-leading third home run of the season.
Boston College 3 #11 Miami (FL) 0
MIAMI – Junior Pat Dean tossed eight shutout innings against No .13 Miami as the Boston College baseball team defeated the Hurricanes, 3-0, Friday night at Alex Rodriguez Park.
Dean, who confused and jammed batters all night, allowed six hits and had a season-high nine strikeouts. Only three runners were able to get into scoring position with Dean on the bump. In his last three outings against the `Canes, he is 3-0 with a 0.41 ERA – allowing one run in 22.0 innings – and has struck out 21 while walking two.
Miami entered the night averaging 9.9 runs a game.

Maryland 10 Virginia Tech 0
BLACKSBURG, Va. – Brett Harman shut down Virginia Tech batters for eight innings and the Terps came up with key hits all afternoon as Maryland won its Atlantic Coast Conference opener, 10-0, on Friday. It was the first time Maryland shut out an ACC opponent since a 7-0 win over NC State on May 4, 2002.
Harman spread out seven hits and didn’t allow Virginia Tech to record two hits in one inning. The junior right-hander struck out five and walked three to improve to 2-2 on the season. Freshman lefty Jimmy Reed pitched a scoreless ninth to preserve the shutout as Maryland won its ACC opener for the first time since 2007.
