East Carolina sophomore 3B Corey Thompson has been named the Conference USA Hitter of the Week after leading the Pirates to a series victory over No. 10 South Carolina. The Pitcher of the Week honor went to Tulane junior RHP Conrad Flynn, who threw eight shutout innings with eight strikeouts in a Friday night win over Lipscomb.
Thompson helped the Pirates to a 3-1 week, including their first ever regular season series win over South Carolina. On the week, he led the team with a .438 (7-for-16) average, seven hits and six RBI. Thompson also drove in at least one run in all four games and had five in the weekend series against No. 10 South Carolina. Dating back to the series finale against then-No. 2 Virginia, he has collected at least one RBI in six-straight games. In Friday’s game against SC, Thompson smacked his second career home run, a two-run shot to right field. He followed that game with a game-tying RBI in the ninth inning on Saturday with a single to left. During the rubber match game, Thompson singled down the left field line pushing across two of the Pirates three runs in the first inning recording his first career game-winning RBI. This is the first weekly award for the sophomore from Apex, N.C.
Flynn picked up his first victory of the season versus Lipscomb on Friday night with eight shutout innings, tying his career-high with eight strikeouts. He didn’t walk a batter and allowed only three hits in the outing. The junior pitched around two errors that allowed runners to get on base and only two LU batters reached third base in the win. Flynn lowered his ERA to 2.57 on the season and is holding opposing batters to just a .163 batting average with one walk in 14 innings. This is the first Pitcher of the Week award for the Midland, Texas native who is in his second season with the Green Wave.
