PROVIDENCE, R.I. – With 11 teams playing 33 games, the 2010 BIG EAST baseball season officially began last week. Coming from a pair of undefeated teams, Notre Dame senior first baseman Casey Martin was named BIG EAST Baseball Player of the Week and Villanova senior RHP Brian Streilein was named BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week.
Martin earns the first Player of the Week award of the 2010 season after pacing the Notre Dame offensive attack in a three-game sweep of Mississippi Valley State Feb. 19-21. The senior batted .500 (8-16) for the weekend with two home runs and seven RBI. He became the first Notre Dame player since 2003 to homer in consecutive games. In the season opener, Martin went 4-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI. In Game 2 he followed with a 2-for-5 performance with a solo home run and finished Game 3 going 2-for-6 with a double, a run scored and four RBI.
Streilein earns the season’s first Pitcher of the Week recognition after a dominating performance in Villanova’s season opener at Norfolk State on Feb. 19. The senior struck out a career-high 12 batters over 6.2 scoreless innings. The 12 fans were the most by a Wildcat since 2002 and the first double-digit strikeout game by one pitcher since 2007. Of the 41 pitches that Norfolk State swung at, only 10 were put into play.
