Here are my top ten story lines from February 20th. We are only two days into the College Baseball season where we see a few interesting storylines developing.
- Cal-State Fullerton is unexpectedly 0-2 with a 6-0 shutout tonight at the hands of Pepperdine. The Titans entered the season as the number 4 team in the country according to the NCBWA but have struggled. The Titans only have 11 hits as a team this year in two games. Where is the potent offense?
- Oregon picked up another win tonight against Long Beach State as they defeated the Dirtbags 6-2. This is interesting that the Ducks have already started to make noise in only Coach Horton’s second year with the program.
- The New Mexico Lobos used a two run ninth inning to edge the number 1 ranked Texas Longhorns to pick up their first win of the 2010 season. Justin Howard hit a one out solo homer in the ninth to tie the game while Max Willett hit a sacrifice fly to bring home freshman Devon Conley to give them a 6-5 lead which they hung onto. You can check out William Knox’s full article about the game by clicking here.
- The Pac-10 has a cumulative record of 19-2 as they went a perfect 9-0 on Friday while going 10-2 today with losses by USC and Washington. The big winner in the Pac-10 has been the Stanford Cardinal who swept the Rice Owls who some people picked to make it to Omaha this year They won the second game of a doubleheader today behind a Kenny Diekroeger two run two out single off the right field wall giving the Cardinal the 7-6 victory to complete the weekend sweep.
- NC State has scored 50 runs in the first two games of their series with LaSalle. Either NC State has a much improved offense or the Explorers have no pitching? I think it is a combination of both.
- Congrats to Georgia Tech’s Danny Hall on winning his 900th career game in a 20-3 victory over Missouri State.
- Also, Congrats to LSU head coach Paul Mainieri to winning his 1,000th game as the Tigers destroyed Centenary by a score of 25-8.
- Matt Purke of TCU made his much talked about freshman debut today against Sam Houston State. He lasted five innings giving up seven hits, four runs (3 earned), while striking out eight batters. (FULL ARTICLE FROM STAR TELEGRAM)
- After losing on Friday 6-5 to Louisiana-Monroe, Ole Miss bounced back on Saturday by shutting out the Warhawks 14-0.
- The longest game of the day saw Lamar defeat Maine in 17 innings by a score of 5-4.
