Point Loma Nazarene, last year’s NAIA runner-up, defeated UC San Diego, ranked #3 in Division II, 8-6.
This game was arguably the best college baseball matchup prior to the start of the Division I season. The Sea Lions started their season 3-0-1 against respectable opposition. The Tritons got an easy win against San Diego Christian in their season opener the previous day.
The star for the Sea Lions was Freshman center fielder Allen Boyer, who went 4-5 and batted in four of the Sea Lions’ eight runs. Steven Winnick, who was switched from a reliever to a starter this season, went six innings, allowed three runs on six hits, and got his first career win as a starter.
The Tritons took a 3-2 lead in the third inning on RBI by 2B Grant Bauer, DH Aaron Bauman, and 3B Evan Kehoe. The Sea Lions took the lead for good with four runs in the sixth, and got the winning run in the eighth on a two-run home run by Boyer.
Bauer, Kehoe, and 1B Brandon Gregorich each got two hits for the Tritons. The Tritons stranded 12 baserunners. The Sea Lions were charged with four errors, but all the the Tritons’ runs were earned. The Tritons used six pitchers; Matt Rossman started, and Kirby St. John got the loss.
