ORONO, Maine — University of Maine athletic director Blake James and head baseball coach Steve Trimper are pleased to announce continuing renovations at Mahaney Diamond.
After completing a major overhaul one year ago by installing Fieldturf as the playing surface, state-of-the-art dugouts are now in the process of being constructed. The new dugouts will expand the current dugouts by an additional 16 feet, and add new drainage. Work began on the project in late December and is expected to be completed before Maine’s home opener against Lehigh on March 26th.
"The construction of the new dugouts will be an outstanding facelift for already one of the best college baseball facilities in the nation," explained Trimper. "It also shows the continuing support for Maine baseball from both our University and community supporters."
The project was funded by private donations and fund raising efforts within the athletic department.
"We are extremely fortunate that there are people, both within our University and the community, that are willing to help us out with either financial contributions or other support that make these type of projects possible." Trimper said.
"We are excited to have the enhancement for our program," said James. "I would like to thank all the people through their generosity made this project possible."
Maine opens the 2010 season on Friday, Feb. 19 when they travel to Beaumont, Texas to face Lamar University in a three game series.
