Top 100 Countdown: Number 4 Chris Sale (Florida Gulf Coast)

ChrisSaleFGC The CBB continues our countdown for the 2010 College Baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.

We continue the list today with number 4 in our countdown with junior LHP Chris Sale from Florida Gulf Coast. He is from Lakeland Florida and attended Lakeland High School. He played under Mike Campbell and was selected in the 21st round by the Colorado Rockies but decided to head to Florida Gulf Coast to continue his baseball career.

 

As a freshman in 2008, he appeared in 21 games including a single start while having a record of 2-0 with an ERA of 3.47 with two saves. He ended up striking out 43 batters in only 36.1 innings of work while holding opponents to a .254 batting average. He was selected to the Freshman All A-Sun team.

Sale had a breakout season in 2009 when he appeared in 14 games including 12 starts. He had a record of 7-4 with a 2.72 ERA. In his 89.1 innings of work he while struck out 104 batters while walking only 27 batters. He held opponents to a .246 batting average against. He earned All-Atlantic First Team honors. He spent the summer of 2009 in the Cape Cod Baseball League with the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox. He went 4-2 with a 1.47 ERA in nine starts while pitching in 55 innings. He struck out 57 batters while only walking nine batters. He was named Outstanding Pitcher Award by the CCBL and the top prospect in the league by Baseball America.
