HOUSTON – Houston Baptist University head baseball coach Jared Moon announced his team’s 55-game 2010 schedule Wednesday, which features 21 games at Husky Field.
“I’m excited about 21 home games after only 10 last year,” Moon said. “It’s nice to play at home, where we have a record of success.
“We play some bigger schools and the number of mid-week games can put a strain on pitching, but we’re focused on being successful in conference and positioning ourselves for a high seed, if not the top seed, at the conference tournament.”
The Huskies begin the season with 14 straight games away from home, beginning with a pair of opening weekend games at Texas-San Antonio Feb. 20 and 21. That trip concludes with a four-game trek through Big 12 Conference country with a mid-week matchup against Oklahoma March 10, followed by a three-game weekend series against Nebraska March 12-14.
HBU’s home opener is not until March 16 against Concordia at Husky Field, but the team will be home for six straight with a pair of non-conference games against Texas-Pan American March 26 and 27 and a four-game series against New Mexico State April 2-4.
The 2010 season marks the first year of Great West Conference play, featuring a 28-game slate. HBU will face the other seven school in four-game weekend series, with doubleheaders on Saturdays.
“We’re happy to be back in a conference,” Moon said. “Not having something to play for the last two years was tough on the team and tough to keep them motivated.
“(The players) are all talking about it and set on winning the conference. We won seven of nine championships when we were last in a conference and we want to repeat that success at this level.”
The Huskies host NJIT in their conference opener April 9 and are also home for Chicago State (April 30-May 2) and Utah Valley (May 20-22), the regular-season finale. HBU will be on the road for conference series against New York Tech (April 16-18), Northern Colorado (April 23-25), Texas Pan American (May 7-9) and North Dakota (May 14-16). Texas-Pan American will host the inaugural Great West Conference Tournament May 26-29 in Edinburg, Texas.
