Top 100 Countdown: Number 78 Tony Zych (Louisville)

TonyZychLouisville The CBB continues our countdown for the 2010 College Baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.

We continue the list today with number 78 in our countdown with Louisville sophomore RHP Tony Zych. He is from Monee Illinois and attended St. Rita High School where he played four seasons under Mike Zunica. He finished his senior season with a .426 batting average with eight homers and 30 RBI as a second baseman.

On the mound, Zych was solid as well with a 7-2 record with a 2.63 ERA and 56 strikeouts. For his accomplishments on the baseball field, he was named to multiple teams or award winner including American Baseball Coaches Association Rawlings High School Gold Glove, ABCA Rawlings All-Region Team, Rawlings Preseason All-American, Under Armour Preseason All-American, National Baseball Coaches Association All-District Team, Illinois HS Baseball Coaches Association All-Area, Illinois Coaches Association Senior East All-Star team and Chicago Tribune All-State Special Mention. The Chicago Cubs selected him in the 46th round but could not come to terms which brought Zych to Louisville. 

Zych came right into the Louisville program seeing action mostly out of the bullpen as he had 6-2 record including two saves with a 3.25 ERA in 21 appearances (3 TonyZychActionPhoto starts). He held opponents to a .235 average against while struggling with his control as he walked 10 batters, four wild pitches, and hit eight batters. He spent the summer of 2009 with the USA National Team where he worked out of the bullpen in six games with a 0-1 record with a 2.93 ERA in 15.1 innings of work. Baseball America named him the 17th best prospect on the USA National team.
