San Jose, Calif. – The 2009 Western Athletic Conference champion San Jose State University baseball team begins fall practice on Wednesday, October 14.
San Jose State head coach Sam Piraro, who will be in his 23rd campaign in 2010 after earning WAC Coach of the Year distinction in back-to-back years, currently has 41 student-athletes on the fall roster, with 18 returners, 13 National Letter-of-Intent signees and 10 walk-on hopefuls. There are only three seniors in the program, in fourth-year infielders Karson Klauer and Corey Valine, and third-year outfielder Alex Sofranac.
During Fall Ball, the Spartans will stage a number of intrasquad games, beginning this Saturday, October 17. On Saturday, October 24, a 12:00 p.m. first pitch at San Jose Municipal Stadium will be followed from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. by the Spartan Spaghetti Feed inside the Gold Room of the Simpkins Stadium Center, for baseball parents and Diamond Club members. The Alumni Game has been moved back to the spring, with the annual Spartan World Series planned to start on Friday, November 13. The intrasquad set again features a best-of-seven format. All seven games will be played out, with the tentative schedule below. All fall dates, times and locations are subject to change without notice.
The San Jose State fall season will come to a close after the seventh game of the Spartan World Series, two days prior to Thanksgiving, on Tuesday, November 24.
The Spartans will officially begin defense of their 2009 WAC crown on Friday, February 19, on the road against Saint Mary’s College in Moraga, Calif. The three-game set with the Gaels will continue into San Jose State’s 2010 home opener the following afternoon, with first pitch slated for 1:00 p.m. inside San Jose Municipal Stadium. The full 2010 schedule will be released in the coming days.
Piraro will have associate head coach Tom Kunis back to direct the pitchers, and third-yearassistant Jeff Pritchard back as the hitting instructor. Former Spartan Brian Yocke returns for his second year as the volunteer assistant coach, joining fifth-year director of baseball operations Jason Piraro to round out the dugout personnel.
