Coastal Carolina releases 2010 Schedule

CoastalPhoto CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina University baseball team and head coach Gary Gilmore have announced its 2010 schedule today (Oct. 14).  The slate includes four in-season tournaments at home, five home games against West Coast powers, six games against teams from the Atlantic Coast Conference and a 27-game Big South schedule.

The Chanticleers open the 2010 season Friday, Feb. 19 against West Virginia in the Caravelle Resort Tournament.  Coastal Carolina welcomes Virginia Tech and Kentucky as well as the Mountaineers on the opening weekend.  After a road contest at Wake Forest Feb. 23, Coastal hosts the annual Baseball at the Beach Tournament at the BB&T Coastal Field in Myrtle Beach, S.C.  Coastal Carolina will play 2009 NCAA Regional host UC Irvine Thursday, Feb. 25 at 4 p.m., and Saturday, Feb. 27 at 12 p.m.  The Chants also face James Madison Friday, Feb. 26 and N.C. State Sunday, Feb. 28.

The Caravelle Resort Invitational will be played March 5-8 as the Chants welcome Toledo, Pittsburgh, Albany and Ball State.  Coastal will face Toledo Friday at 4 p.m., Pittsburgh Saturday, March 6 at 3:30 p.m., and Ball State March 7-8.  The game March 7 will be played at BB&T Coastal Field. at 2 p.m.  A home game against Wake Forest March 9 will be followed by the Caravelle Resort Classic March 12-14.  The Chants welcome Big Ten foes Michigan and Illinois as well as Lipscomb and Ball State for the final in-season tournament of the year.  Coastal faces Illinois March 12-13 and Michigan March 13-14.  The Sunday game against Michigan will be at BB&T Coastal Field.

The Chants are at the College of Charleston Tuesday, March 16 and open Big South play Friday, March 19 at Charleston Southern for a three-game series.  Coastal is at The Citadel Tuesday, March 23, before hosting West Coast Conference foe San Diego for a three-game series at Watson Stadium/Vrooman Field March 26-28.  Friday’s game will begin at 6 p.m., with Saturday and Sunday’s contests starting at 2 and 12 p.m., respectively.

The Chanticleers are at in-state rival Clemson Wednesday, March 31 before starting an eight-game homestand in the beginning of April.  Three-game series with Presbyterian and High Point and midweek games against UNC Wilmington and The Citadel all will be played in Watson Stadium. 

The homestand is followed by a nine-game road trip that begins with a game at 2009 College World Series participant North Carolina Wednesday, April 14.  The game is a rematch of the 2009 Chapel Hill Regional winner’s bracket game.  Three-game conference series at Gardner-Webb and VMI and midweek games at UNC Wilmington and 2009 College World Series participant Virginia round out the road trip for the Chanticleers.

Coastal Carolina hosts UNC Asheville and Winthrop in three-game series centered around final exams.  The series against Winthrop is a rematch of the 2009 Big South Tournament championship game, which the Chanticleers won 7-1.  The final home game will take place Tuesday, May 18 against the College of Charleston.

Coastal Carolina will be at Liberty May 14-16 and will end the regular season with a three-game set at Radford May 20-22.

The Big South Tournament will take place May 25-29 at the Winthrop Ballpark in Rock Hill, S.C.

In all, Coastal Carolina will play five games against NCAA Tournament teams from 2009.

Coastal Carolina ended the 2009 season after winning the Big South regular-season and tournament title. The Chants also had eight All-Big South honorees and four All-Big South Tournament selections.
