The CBB continues our countdown for the 2010 College Baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.
We continue the list today with number 99 in our countdown with junior outfielder Matt Newman from Arizona State who stands at 5’11 175 pounds. He comes from Brophy Prep School and Glendale Arizona. After earning his two letters with Brophy, he was selected by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 49th round (1419th overall) of the 2007 MLB Draft. He couldn’t come to an agreement with the Diamondbacks which saw him continue his career at Arizona State.
Newman had a solid freshman campaign with Arizona State which saw him get action in 56 games including 39 starts. He finished the season with a .322 average with three homers and 28 RBI. He spent the summer of 2008 with the Alaska Goldpanners where he hit .339 while going 2-2 on the mound.
In the 2009 season, he played in 64 games (61 starts) while finishing with a .305 average, seven homers, and 54 RBI which was good enough for fifth in the Pac-10 conference. He also made 11 appearances on the mound where he went 2-1. After the season, he spent the summer touring the world with the USA Collegiate National team where he played in 19 games including 15 starts where he had a .315 average with a homer and 13 RBI.
