AndyLentzGeorgetown Washington, D.C. – The Georgetown University baseball team announced their 2010 schedule on Monday afternoon. The Hoyas will play nine BIG EAST series this season, five at Shirley Povich Field. GU will also take on the top six teams in the BIG EAST standings from 2009 and national power Virginia.

The 2010 season starts in North Carolina as the Hoyas play at Davidson in a three-game series, February 19-21. Georgetown opens play at Shirley Povich Field when the Hoyas host the New York Institute of Technology the following weekend and Norfolk State on March 2. After that, GU travels to the alma mater of Head Coach Pete Wilk for Rollins College Baseball Week. The team will play eight games in nine days against Penn, Maine and the host Tars.

On March 17, Georgetown travels to George Mason before three straight with George Washington. The Hoyas and Colonials will play at GW on March 19 before hosting the final two games on March 20-21. After a road game with Delaware State, GU starts an eight-game home stand on March 24 with Navy.

BIG EAST play opens with Rutgers, March 26-28, and continues with Notre Dame, April 1-3. The octet of contests ends with UMBC in a mid-week game. After a contest at Norfolk State the Hoyas head to Tampa, Fla. for a series with USF before returning to the area for a home game with Mount St. Mary’s and a fourth game with George Washington.

Last year’s BIG EAST runner-up, Connecticut, comes to town April 16-18 and Delaware State visits on April 21. Georgetown then heads on its longest road trip of the season, an eight-game swing from April 23-May 4. The Hoyas play three at St. John’s before traveling to Charlottesville, Va., to play the No. 5 Virginia Cavaliers. Then it’s back to conference play with a three-game set at Villanova and the road swing ends with a contest at UMBC.

Georgetown’s final home stand of the season consists of two significant BIG EAST series. First off, No. 17 Louisville, the reigning conference champs come to town May 7-9. The following weekend, the Hoyas close league play with West Virginia and the team will also recognize their seniors during the series. The 2010 home schedule comes to an end with a mid-week night game against George Mason on May 18. The regular season concludes at Cincinnati, May 20-22.

This year’s BIG EAST Baseball Championship will once again be held at Bright House Field in Clearwater, Fla. The top eight teams in the 12-team conference will advance to the tournament with play beginning on May 26 and the championship game slated for May 30. The BIG EAST championship game will be shown live on ESPNU.
