The University of Iowa baseball team welcomes several new faces this fall including Mike Corbeil, Kevin Gates and Kurt Lee.
Corbeil, a Chesterfield, MO, native, is an incoming freshman infielder. He was a two-time all-state, all-district and all-conference selection his two years on the Marquette High School varsity squad. Corbeil’s senior season he hit .453 with four home runs and 37 RBI. In his career at Marquette he set the career RBI record, with 54. Corbeil was part of the 2008 Suburban West Conference Championship team and partook in the Junior Sunbelt Games.
Gates, from Chesterton, IN, is a right-handed pitcher. He was named team MVP and an all-conference honoree his senior year. Gates finished his career at Chesterton High School with a 16-5 record and 121 strikeouts in three years. His senior campaign, Gates went 8-2 with a 3.25 ERA and 61 strikeouts. Gates was part of the WWBA fall national championship, playing for second-place Cangelosi.
Lee, hailing from Redding, CA, is a junior college transfer. Lee has played middle infield for both Lassen College (2008) and Shasta College (2009). For Shasta, he played shortstop finishing his sophomore campaign hitting .391 with 17 stolen bases. Lee was a first team all-GVC selection, a team MVP and the conference’s MVP runner-up. Lee played for the Cape Cod League winning Bourne Braves this past summer.
They join Matt Dermody, Ricky Sandquist and Dan Sheppard in Iowa’s class of 2010.
