Four games on the schedule on the fourth day of the Area Code Baseball Games. Three of the four ended up being decided by just a single run and the Nationals poured it on the Brewers Gray. But the kids on the Gray team should be proud for the way they fought back in their second game of the day. They could have rolled over, but showed tremendous character in their 2-1 win.
Cincinnati Reds 2, Milwaukee Brewers Blue 1
It was Day 4 in Long Beach and the Brewers, because of schedule, will play three times (the Gray plays a twin bill). The Brewers Blue kicked it off against the Reds in the morning. The Reds came into the game with a record of 1-0-1 and the Brewers Blue with a record of 1-0-1.
The Reds had a scoring threat in their half of the third with runners in scoring position. Henry Owens wiggled out of a jam and kept the score knotted at 0-0.
In the top of the fourth the Reds got on the board with a pair of runs. Marco Gonzales walked with one out and scored on an RBI double by Trevor Allen, who moved over to third on an errant throw to the plate. Then Trevor Allen came across on a botched run down attempt.
Washington Nationals 13, Milwaukee Brewers Gray 3
The storyline here in this game is Drew Vettleson. Not for what the kid did at the plate, he went (FILL, but for what he did, and can do on the mound. He got the nod in the game against the Brewers Gray.
Vettleson, out of Central Kitsap High School in Washington, does something that few players do. Pitches as both a righty and a lefty. And to top it off he is a solid outfielder, who as seen this week can hit and run. He may be an outfielder at the next level, but it was sure fun to watch him throw off the mound.
At the tryout in Bellevue, Wash., Vettleson threw both right handed and left handed and even though we were told that he can do this, seeing it was quite different.
Milwaukee Brewers Gray 2, Chicago White Sox 1
AJ Vanegas (Redwood Christian, Calif.) got the nod for the Brewers Gray, trying to escape memories of their previous game. The big righty started strong for the Brewers as he only faced four batters.
Chicago White Sox starter Justin O’Conner got the nod. The righty out of, Cowan HS, Ind., got into a two out jam in the bottom of the first, but got Cory Hahn (Mater Dei HS, Calif.) to pop out and end the threat.
Vanegas went through the White Sox in the second with ease and the Brewers Gray defense was tighter. Early on it seemed that the players were more into the second game. It had more pace to from both teams and both pitchers grabbed control early on and did not relinquish it through four.
Oakland Athletics 6, New York Yankees 5
The Yankees pushed the first run of the game across when Sean Coyle scored on an error by Athletics second baseman, Tim Massengale. Mark Podlas then knocked in Mike Antonio to make it a 2-0 Yankee lead.
After the Athletics went quietly in the second, but the Yankees put another on the board. Dillon Moyer flew out to right and Jared King scored from third. Cito Culver then drove in Michael Montville, on a two out single to right and the Yankees led 4-0.
Keenan Kish threw the ball well for the Yankees in the final game of the day. The starter went three innings and surrendered no runs. He only gave up two hits and he struck out four. FULL STORY
