Wates has showcased his in the Cape putting up huge numbers including a batting average over .300 against some of the best pitchers in the country. He also has excellent speed which is seen in his 6.5 second time in the 60.

He has spent the last 11 years in charge of the Commodores after having two assistant coaching jobs to start his Cape career.
