Bombers win opener 4-2, but fall in second game of set 4-0.
Coppell, TX (July 29, 2009) –
After waiting through two days of heavy rain, the Brazos Valley Bombers and Coppell Copperheads finally squared off in a doubleheader today. The Bombers were victorious in the opener, winning 4-2, but lost the nightcap 4-0.
The Bombers got off to a fast start in game one of the doubleheader, as Joaquin Hinojosa hit a solo home run in the second inning to put the Bombers on top. Although they fell behind 2-1 in the fourth inning, the Bombers roared back with a three run fifth to put them ahead for good. They had three hits in the inning, including a sacrifice fly from Cliff Vaughn, RBI single by Joaquin Hinojosa and an RBI walk by Marc Damon.
Drew Flaniken was solid on the mound, striking out eight in six innings to pick up his fifth win of the season. With the win, he matched the Bombers all-time wins record, which was set last summer by Jason Zylstra. Joaquin Hinojosa pitched a perfect seventh inning to earn his sixth save of the season.
In the second game of the doubleheader, the Bombers offense was shut out by Rett Varner, who pitched a complete game two-hitter. He also struck out seven batters.
Brian Watson pitched another good game, but dropped to 0-5 on the season, as his stretch of tough luck continued.
The Bombers are off until Saturday, when they will face off against the first-place Victoria Generals on Terrence Murphy Bobble head night. Murphy will be joined by Texas A&M Aggies quarterback Jerrod Johnson, basketball star Nathan Walkup and national champion men’s golf coach J.T. Higgins in throwing out the first pitch.
