The Bangor Daily News has an excellent article on former Maine coach John Winkin who took the Black Bears to the College World Series six times with the most recent appearance in 1986. He also coached at Colby College of Waterville ME and Husson College of Bangor ME during his 53 year career from 1954-2007. He was able to accumlate over 1,000 victories combined with the three schools. He finished his coaching career in 2007 when he suffered a stroke on his daily walk in Bangor. The College Baseball Hall of Fame will honor Winkin during their induction ceremonies on July 3rd in Lubbock TX. The University of Maine recently held a reception and dinner to honor Winkin and you can read about it by clicking here.

A great coach and a great man. I had the honor of playing under him at Colby (1968-1970).
