National Team Trials: Segedin, Blue Team Handle Red Team, 5-1

USA Baseball Logo(CARY, N.C.) – Rob Segedin (Tulane) went 2-3 with two doubles and three RBI and the Blue Team defeated the Red Team for the seventh consecutive time by a score of 5-1 in the final intrasquad game at the USA Baseball National Team (Collegiate) Trials.

Tyler Holt (Florida State) took the first pitch of the game off of his shoulder and advanced to third base on a sacrifice bunt and a stolen base to begin the game for the Blue Team. Michael Choice (UT Arlington) then slammed a ball back up the middle for the RBI single to put the Blue Team ahead 1-0 early on Red Team starter Logan Verrett (Baylor).

Matt Newman (Arizona State) outlasted an early 0-2 count to draw a walk to begin the second for the Red Team and Ross Wilson (Alabama) singled to short to put two runners on base for Tony Thompson (Kansas). Thompson then sent a sacrifice fly to right field to bring in Newman to even the score at one apiece after two innings.

Jedd Gyorko (West Virginia) laced a double down the left field line to begin the fourth inning for the Blue Team and Rob Segedin (Tulane) roped his first double of the game to the left center gap to bring Gyorko around and go ahead 2-1.

Segegin came up big again in the sixth inning for the Blue Team. After Red Team pitcher Alex Wimmers (Ohio State) surrendered two consecutive walks, Segedin connected for his second double of the day, bringing Brad Miller (Clemson) and Christian Colon (Cal State Fullerton) around to score and extend the lead to 4-1.

The Blue Team capped the scoring in the game as Kolten Wong (Hawaii) hit an RBI triple to right centerfield for the final score of 5-1.

Both starting pitchers allowed a run in the game. Red Team starter Verrett went three innings and struck out five while Blue Team starter Cody Martin (Gonzaga) went two and a third innings before leaving the game with cramps in his throwing shoulder. Martin struck out two batters.

Wimmers picked up the loss for the Red Team and Tyler Pill (Fullerton) received the win in two and two-thirds innings. Pill struck out five batters on the day.

The 2009 USA Baseball National Team (Collegiate) will announce its final 22-man roster later Wednesday evening. The USA Baseball National Team will face Canada in the first game of the friendship series, Thursday, June 25 at the USA Baseball National Training Complex at 7:00 PM.
