FROM PRESS RELEASE
New York, NY (June 2, 2009) – The award-winning filmmaker, Richard Linklater, made his documentary debut last year with the heartwarming biographical pic of the winningest coach in NCAA Division I history, “Inning By Inning: A Portrait of A Coach.” An exclusive red-carpet screening of the film was held in Austin, Texas followed by a television debut on ESPN. Now fans of the film and Augie Garrido can own a copy on DVD, as Virgil Films & Entertainment releases “Inning By Inning: A Portrait of a Coach” on June 2nd, 2009. This collectible DVD will also include a 90- minute full length feature on the 2006 season titled, “A Game of Adversity” and an additional 60-minute feature on Augie’s coaching philosophy titled, “Extra Innings with Augie.”
“This film is not just for avid fans of the legendary coach but rather for all sports enthusiasts. The film is an intimate look at how Garrido’s coaching methods stand out from the rest of the greats,” says Joe Amodei, President of Virgil Films & Entertainment.
Although the highly acclaimed filmmaker Richard Linklater’s impressive list of accredited films including “Me and Orson Welles”, “Fast Food Nation”, “Bad News Bears” (2005), “The School of Rock”, “The Newton Boys”, and “Dazed and Confused” to name a few, this is Linklater’s first crack at the documentary genre. The Austin American Statesman called the film “Terrific.”
The film provides viewers with an intimate look inside the world of University of Texas baseball coach Augie Garrido. Through unprecedented access to the team meetings, practices, in-game conversations and the occasional tirade, the film examines this remarkable coach’s career and reveals Garrido’s Zen-like approach to the game that both inspires and changes lives. Garrido has won five National Championships (Three at Cal State Fullerton and two at University of Texas) and is the only coach to win National Championship in four different decades at two different schools.
The film includes interviews with former players, coaches, Alumni, baseball luminaries and friends. These intimate one-on-one interviews with Garrido’s peers including Darrell Royal and Roger Clemens, former Texas and Cal State-Fullerton players, reveal the remarkable man behind the achievements. Other interviews include Mark Kotsay, Phil Nevin, Huston Street, Tim Wallach, Kevin Costner and Matthew McConaughey.
On May 26th, 2009, Linklater will make a special appearance at the University of Texas’ final home game of the season versus Texas A&M to throw out the first pitch prior to the 1pm game time. With the support of local venues, Virgil Films & Entertainment will coordinate additional screenings in the area to promote the DVD release. Consumer marketing support of the DVD release includes statewide radio giveaways throughout the Longhorn Radio Network Stations, along with additional key stations during the first two weeks of the release. Banner ads will be posted on the home page of www.texassports.com as well as a thorough viral marketing campaign including fan-based site to begin two weeks prior to street date. Virgil Films & Entertainment will also purchase a half-page advertisement in The Alcalde. Richard will be making various in-store appearances in the Austin area to promote the film and DVD release.
