FULLERTON, CA- No. 19 Gonzaga University pounded out 18 hits to post a 19-10 opening game win over #29 Georgia Southern University in the first game of the Fullerton Regional of the NCAA Tournament Friday afternoon. The 19 runs scored is a season-high for the Zags and the most ever scored by a Gonzaga squad in an NCAA Tournament game, a span of 22 games.
The Bulldogs (36-16) put up runs in all but one inning on the Eagles (42-16), scoring runs in the final seven innings to post its first NCAA Tournament victory since 1980. Tyson Van Winkle and Mark Castellitto paced the GU offense with three hits and three RBI apiece. Ryan Wiegand, Anthony Synegal and Castellitto each hit home runs as every starter recorded a hit and scored a run. Reliever Reedy Berg picked up the game one win after scattering six hits and striking out six in six innings to advance the Zags into Saturday’s 6 p.m. winner bracket matchup against either Cal State Fullerton or Utah.

Cal St. Fullerton- 18, Utah- 2
FULLERTON, CA – Cal State Fullerton senior Jared Clark finished with four hits and three runs driven in and the Titans’ offense set a season high with 24 hits on the night as No. 2-national seeded Fullerton cruised to a 18-2 victory over Utah on Friday night in the second game of the 2009 NCAA Baseball Regionals at Goodwin Field in front of 2,441 fans.
Seven Titans finished with multiple hits on the night as Fullerton improved to 43-14 overall on the season and will meet third-seeded Gonzaga in a winner’s bracket game on Saturday night at 6 p.m. The Utes (26-30) fell into the losers bracket and will meet second-seeded Georgia Southern in an elimination game at 2 p.m.
Freshman right-hander Noe Ramirez (8-1) pitched seven innings to earn the victory, allowing just two runs on seven hits and striking out eight. Jordan Whatcott (5-3) suffered the loss for Utah, slammed for eight runs (seven earned) on 10 hits in just 2 2/3 innings of work – the first of three Utes pitchers on the evening.
