2009 NCAA Regional Preview: Tallahassee (FL)

The Florida State Seminoles will host a regional this year which features the number 2 seed Georgia Bulldogs out of the SEC, Ohio State out of the Big Ten Conference is the number 3 seed, while Marist is the fourth seed out of the MAAC.

Florida State enters the tournament with a 42-16 record and won the ACC Atlantic Division title by going 19-9 in the conference. They have a 30-6 record at the friendly confines of Dick Howser Stadium. Tyler Holt is the top hitter on the Seminoles squad with a .388 batting average while leading off most of the year for the Seminoles. He has also stolen 32 bases in 37 attempts. The top pitcher for the Noles is Sean Gilmartin who is 11-3 with a 3.64 ERA in 16 appearances including 13 starts.

FSU stats

Georgia enters with a 37-22 overall record and went 15-15 in SEC play. They are led by National POY candidate Rich Poythress who is hitting .370 with 21 homers and 77 RBI. Bryce Massanari is right behind Poythress with 19 homers and 57 RBI while hitting .321. Justin Grimm has a 3-4 record and an ERA of 4.19 while Trevor Holder is 7-4 with a 4.34 ERA. Dean Weaver leads the team with 10 saves while having a record of 4-2 with an ERA of 2.77 in 28 appearances.

Georgia stats

Ohio State enters the tournament with a 40-17 record while going 18-6 in Big Ten play. They are led on offense by Ryan Dew who is hitting .389 with seven homers and 35 RBI. The biggest story with the Ohio State team is the development of Alex Wimmers who has become one of the best pitchers in the nation. He is currently 9-1 with a 2.68 ERA. He has also struck out 131 batters in his 100.2 innings of work. The closer for the Buckeyes is Jake Hale who is 0-1 but has an ERA of 1.12 with 16 saves.

Ohio State stats

The Marist Red Foxes are considered one of the weakest teams in the NCAA tournament this year as they won the MAAC tournament as the third seed. They currently have a record of 31-26 overall and went 15-9 in the MAAC. They are led on offense by Bryce Nugent who is hitting .324 with eight homers and 42 RBI. B.J. Martin is the top pitcher on the team 5-5 record with an ERA of 4.11. Marist isn’t expected to win a game in this regional and shouldn’t give any team a game.
