PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Junior lefthanded pitcher Justin Marks of Louisville was named the BIG EAST Player of the Week after his commanding performance in the first of three games against USF. Freshman second baseman T.J. Jones of Cincinnati was named the BIG EAST Player of the Week after scoring the winning run in the last game of the season to punch the Bearcat’s ticket to the BIG EAST Championship in Clearwater, Fla.

In a season full of solid performances, Marks saved his best effort for his biggest start of the year. He scattered four hits in 7.2 shutout innings in Louisville’s 2-1 win against first-place USF, sparking the Cardinals’ three-game sweep of the Bulls that delivered the BIG EAST regular-season title to Louisville. Marks struck out 12 without walking a batter to improve to 9-2 on the year and improve his own school records for career wins (27), strikeouts (282) and earned-run average (2.82).

Jones hit .571 (8-for-14), scored five runs, and had eight hits with a double, a home run and four RBI as Cincinnati took two of three games from Seton Hall to claim the final spot in the 2009 BIG EAST Championship. Jones drove in the game-winning run in the first game of the series, hit a three-run home run in the second game and scored the winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning of the do-or-die third game to cap the Bearcats’ come-from-behind win.
