PHILADELPHIA (5/12/09) – Temple senior outfielder Sean Barksdale (Glenolden, PA / Cardinal O’Hara) and Villanova junior righthander Brian Streilein (Staten Island, NY / Brick Memorial) have been named the Philadelphia Big 5 Baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, in voting conducted by the head coaches and sports information offices.
Barksdale batted .389 (7-for-18) with two home runs and nine RBI in four games last week for the Owls. He broke Temple’s 31-year old career RBI record on Friday and now has 162 for his career. The co-captain had two homers on Saturday, moving him into third on the TU single season (15) and career (27) lists. He batted .800 with runners in scoring position.
Streilein pitched seven innings, allowing one earned run and scattering six hits in a 16-2 win over Georgetown on Saturday. He struck out five and walked just two for his fourth win of the season. He took a shutout into the seventh and allowed just two runners to reach third base.
Formed with the mission of increasing the exposure of college baseball in the area, Philadelphia Big 5 Baseball is comprised of the five Division I universities in Philadelphia that sponsor baseball. The Big 5 will announce a Player and Pitcher of the Week every Monday during the season. The fourth annual All-Big 5 baseball team will be announced at the conclusion of the season.
