GREENSBORO, N.C. – Florida State’s Tommy Oravetz has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Baseball Player of the Week, while Duke’s Christopher Manno was tabbed for Pitcher of the Week of the honors.
Oravetz hit .625 in five games and led all Seminole hitters in hits, doubles, home runs, RBI, total bases (22) and slugging percentage (1.375). The senior designated hitter twice tied a career-high with three hits as he registered at least one hit in all five games.
Against Jacksonville and Florida International, Oravetz posted identical numbers going 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI. Oravetz opened the week recording his first career multi-home run game as he hit a pair of solo shots in a 5-2 win over Jacksonville. Against FIU, the Tallahassee, Fla., native was a triple shy of hitting for the cycle as he registered hits in his first three at-bats posting an RBI single in the first, a solo shot in the second and a double off the fence in right in the fourth.
In the weekend series against Georgia Tech, Oravetz hit .500 while recording a hit in all three games. In Saturday’s 8-6 win, Oravetz was responsible for the first four Seminole runs. After recording a two-out, two run single in the first, Oravetz tied the game in the third on a two-run double. He delivered a pinch-hit single in the ninth in his only at-bat in the series finale on Sunday. Oravetz finished the week raising his season batting average 44 points and is now hitting .262 on the year in 50 games.
In Friday’s 11-4 win at Virginia, Manno held the 11th-ranked Cavaliers to just one run over six innings to improve to 5-4 on the season. Manno struck out eight Cavaliers. Virginia entered the game with the second fewest strikeouts in the ACC and currently leads the league in hitting as a team with a .341 average.
Manno’s eight strikeouts were the most by a starter against Virginia since April 19, when Boston College’s Pat Dean also struck out eight, and tied for the second-most strikeouts by a starting pitcher against Virginia.
Manno fired 94 pitches in the start, 62 of which were strikes. Over his last seven starts, Manno is 4-1 with a 2.35 ERA. Manno, who also worked a scoreless inning vs. Davidson earlier in the week, is averaging 9.63 strikeouts per game during that span.
