ATLANTA — Georgia Tech junior first baseman Tony Plagman went 5-for-5 with 4 runs and 3 RBIs to lead the Yellow Jackets to a 12-3 victory over the Florida State Seminoles in game 1 of a crucial ACC series.
Florida State started off the game scoring 3 in the top of the first, with 5 hits including a 2-run homer from junior shortstop Stephen Cardullo. But those were the only runs Florida State were going to get on the night.
Georgia Tech scored the remaining 12 runs of the game, including 10 runs off Florida State starting pitcher Sean Gilmartin before he was relieved by Jack Posey. Senior catcher Jason Haniger and freshman third baseman Matt Skole contributed home runs to Georgia Tech’s cause.
Yellow Jacket sophomore righty Deck McGuire earned the win, improving to 9-0 on the season while improving Georgia Tech’s record to 32-11-1 and 15-7-1 in the ACC. Sean Gilmartin took only his second loss of the season, dropping to 9-2. Florida State’s win streak ended at 14 games, and the Seminoles drop to 35-13 and 18-8 in the ACC.
The two teams continue the series at 1pm Saturday with Georgia Tech sophomore righty Brandon Cumpton (3-1, 4.47) taking on Florida State freshman lefty Brian Busch (4-2, 3.92).
